Bar/Bat Mitzvah Programs

A Bar or Bat Mitzvah celebrates the transition from childhood to adulthood, with all the changes and turbulence that occur during that time of growth. The B’nei Mitzvah is when our young people recognize their responsibility to Jewish life and their community. It also provides opportunities for families to reflect and discuss what Jewish living means in this time of transition. The Rabbi and staff of Beth Ahabah help you make the most of this wonderful milestone in a family’s life, which is optional for our students.  See The Congregation Beth Ahabah B’nei Mitzvah Guidelines  for all the information you will need to understand how Bar/Bat Mitzvah works at Beth Ahabah. B’nei Mitzvah dates are assigned in August, two academic years ahead the Bar or Bat Mitzvah (usually the summer before 5th grade year). Individual preparations begin approximately 12 months before the simcha (occasion).

Highlights include:

  • Twice yearly “nuts and bolts” meetings for parents of 5th and 6th graders to help families prepare for the program and answer questions that parents may have
  • How to request a date for the Bar/Bat Mitzvah
  • The preparation process:
  • Scheduling meetings with Rabbi and staff
  • Evaluation of Hebrew skills
  • Scheduling sessions to learn prayers, Torah and Haftarah portions
  • Preparation of D’var Torah and Mitzvah project
  • Sanctuary rehearsal schedule
